(Please scroll down for the English version)
The government quietly put the.Lantau Tomorrow Vision funding request of $550 million on the agenda of the Finance Committee meeting on the last day of the current legislative year. Amid the coronavirus pandemic and the imposition of the national security law on Hong Kong, the government and pro-government legislators tried to fish in troubled waters, to get the funding approved little noticed by the public. What they did not realize was how strong the opposition to the project is among Hongkongers. Greenpeace registered over a hundred thousand citizens’ opposing the project within two days. Pan- democratic legislators stood firm to resist the introduction of the bill in the committee. The voice of the people has been heard again and again from the time the project was introduced in 2014 by ex-Chief Executive CY Leung.
More importantly, the anti-extradition bill movement in 2019 generated momentum to resist the Lantau Tomorrow Vision project. Without the awakening of popular consciousness in Hong Kong during that movement, the project’s funding may have been approved, followed shortly thereafter by the planning and engineering study. The “tumor” would have been implanted, and the “cancer” will spread.
Given the strong opposition to Lantau Tomorrow Vision, Chief Executive Carrie Lam should have withdrawn the project, just as she should have quickly withdrawn the extradition bill last year. Instead, she threw down the gauntlet to Hong Kong citizens during a TV interview, insisting that she wants the project approved during her remaining time in the office.
As long as the project is not withdrawn, the battle is not over—even though we have won the war thus far. The coming legislative council election is a crucial battlefield that we must win if we want to save Hong Kong from this disastrous project .
The Lantau Tomorrow Vision project has not been withdrawn yet.
We should unite, remain vigilant, keep on fighting, and resist to the end.
May the glory return to Hong Kong
Save Lantau Alliance."
